Granville East PS has continued its focus on student agency and student voice, embedding initiatives. Check out the way in which GEPS has incorporated student agency and voice into its Year 6 reports.
The report emphasises student voice to make a personal document that reflects each student. The first page shows a photo of the student when in Kindergarten and now in Year 6 and then reports student achievement related to grade level. A 'learning overview"  gives students an opportunity to reflect on the year's learning under the headings: head (learning that connected with them or challenged them); heart (learning that brought them joy); and hand (something that they had made, drawn or created. On the final page the student adds a writing sample of their choice. A key feature is a link to the video of the "legacy speech" that the student has written to reflect on their schooling ay GEPS.

PROBLEM OF PRACTICE

How are our students developing their agency?
  • Are students developing the confidence and resources to engage in the learning?
  • Are the tasks hooking students in with their relevance and challenge?
  • How are teachers eliciting student thinking to deepen learning?

Students with agency:

   * build knowledge

   * demonstrate understanding

   * set intentions and produce results

   * experience efficacy

   * feel a sense of belonging

   * know their core identity is valued

During the round small groups collaborated to define student agency based on the pre-round reading.  Then the Visible Learning routine, "Making Meaning" was used to flesh out what agency should look like in our classrooms.  Finally participants reflected on the growth of their understanding. Here's what we thought.
