Learning to Write and Writing to Learn

Writing might be seen to be the lesser of the 3Rs if the number of rounds conducted in this network is any indication. However, accomplished writing is a cherished skill, and, in the most effective classrooms, writing to learn has a prominent place. When teaching students how to write time needs to be devoted wisely using teaching practices with a proven track record of success.

There is also a key role for writing in learning across all disciplines. Engaging in the slow, deep thinking that writing requires deepens understanding of concepts and connections. It enables students to find their voices and to articulate their perspectives. Because of giving multiple opportunities for students to write to learn fosters a more engaging classroom culture.

Our first round devoted to the teaching of writing took place at Granville East PS in 2018.  The resources are below. In 2024 and 2025 rounds were conducted at Enfield PS. In 2024 the emphasis was on learning to write and on the most effective teaching strategies.  In 2025 the focus was writing to learn, investigating ways that teachers use writing to deepen understandings across the curriculum.

WHAT DOES THE RESEARCH TELL US ABOUT WHAT'S IMPORTANT IN THE TEACHING OF WRITING?
Here are two great articles,. "A Path to Better Writing" gives specific recommendations based on a meta-analysis for students in Kinder to Year 5. Click here to download.

The second article, What Does An Effective Teacher of Writing Do?" is based on a longitudinal study of teachers judged who achieved excellent results in writing. Click here to download

These two articles give a great deal of guidance to school leaders and to classroom teachers as they go about improving students' skills in writing.

Our network members created texts to persuade others to teach writing in a way that engages students and ensures effective writing results

How creative are our network members as they create texts to display their understandings about teaching writing.  We have:
